Teens love finding new and creative ways to insult people — and for those of us who can barely keep up with anything they’re saying, it can get confusing. Especially the newest slang term: “SDIYBT.” This long acronym is (like most teen slang) silly and a little weird. Brace yourselves, fam, we’re about to dive in!

The latest trend taking over TikTok comes from none other than SpongeBob SquarePants. SDIYBT stands for, “Start digging in your butt, twin.” Yes, seriously.

According to Know Your Meme, the catchphrase (along with variations like “digging in yo butt” and the acronym SDIYBT) went viral after someone posted an edited clip of a scene from the episode “Welcome to the Chum Bucket.” In the scene, Plankton asked a robot that looks like SpongeBob and has SpongeBob’s brain to make him a Krabby Patty. The robot responds, “Start digging in your butt, twin,” making Plankton mad.

The sound went viral on TikTok, with people using the sound to make videos and even covering popular songs and switching out the lyrics to “start digging in your butt, twin.”

This isn’t the first time teens have taken old media and made new slang terms from it. Like when they say everything “rhymes with Grug,” which was taken from the movie The Croods, when Grug tried to rhyme things with his name, but it never actually rhymed. Hence, the meme!

Also, teens love using acronyms to make it easier to post on TikTok (and hide from their parents). Like “SYBAU,” which means “shut your b—- a—up.” Hey, at least digging in your butt is a little nicer than that!

If you still can’t quite wrap your head around this term, that’s OK. I’m sure they’ll move onto something else pretty quickly next week, anyway (especially if all the adults in their lives start saying it).
