Terry Dubrow Reveals How He Feels About His Kids Getting Plastic Surgery
Admittedly, Terry Dubrow doesn't always preach what he practices.
Yes, the Beverly Hills-based plastic surgeon has made quite the living from those who elect to go under the knife. But as a skilled revision surgeon, he's well aware how easily things can get, well, botched.
So when one of the four kids he shares with Real Housewives of Orange County star Heather Dubrow—21-year-old twins Nick and Max, Kat, 18, and Ace, 14—approached him about getting her lips done, "I go, 'Uh, no,'" Terry recounted in an exclusive interview with E! News. "And they go, 'Really? Really?'"
Acknowledged Terry, "It's hard to be a busy plastic surgeon who puts food on the table doing this, and to say to your kids, 'No, it's okay for everybody else, but not for you.'"
Which is why he doesn't phrase it like that, exactly.
Instead, the self-described "accepting, permissive father," urges his kids to dig deep.
"The way Heather and I handle this is, we go, 'Okay, let's talk about that,'" Terry shared. "And they go, 'Oh, here we go, Mom and Dad are going to make us talk about it.'"
Which in turn prompts them to respond, "'Yeah, we want to talk about it,'" explained Terry. "Because last thing we want you to do is be regretful, make a decision for the you now that you will regret later and to look back and say to us, 'Why didn't you make me work this out?'"
And so, noted the 66-year-old—who's working with Kim Zolciak, Aubrey O'Day, 90 Day Fiancé's Larissa Santos Lima and other plastic surgery regulars interested in achieving a more natural look on E!'s Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind—they talk it out.
"I am open to my kids making the appropriate changes," said Terry. "If they had a bad nose, I would be the first to say, 'Sure, but what are you hoping to gain?'"
Because it's important to him to sniff out any potential issues.
He and his wife of 26 years are "really easy people to talk to," noted Terry. "And we made a career of hopefully putting a platform out there about how to treat your kids."
The TL;DR version, he detailed, is to not be a jerk.
His particular area of expertise involves his kids' sexual identities, with Max coming out as bisexual, Kat sharing that she's gay and Ace identifying as transgender, but his advice applies to any serious parent-child conversation.
"Act like there are cameras around and that you're going to be held accountable for the way you act," the reality show vet recommended of how to handle weighty issues. "That immediately removes all of your preconceived douchiness you might have."
From there, he continued: "Give your kids a supportive, loving environment. That's the perfect place to start."
For Terry, that means serving as a solid sounding board.
"You may have your biases and your preconceived notions, but it ain't about you, it's about them, and they live in a completely different world than you grew up in," he explained of supporting his "rainbow of kids."
Bottom line, he stressed, "We all know the right thing to do. We all know the right way to act with our kids."
And he's thrilled for the opportunity to model that behavior.
"If we can change hearts and minds by showing how our version of a normal, supportive family can be, we try to be role models for these conversations," explained Terry, "and that's that's the platform that Heather and I have been chosen to have and to put out there. And we're honored and we're grateful."
Perhaps, he quipped, "Would I prefer to be chosen for being a multi-billionaire building hospitals all over the world like Bill Gates and treating disease and flying around in a Boeing business jet? Maybe. But that's not the platform that I was given by the universe."
All jokes aside, said Terry, he's thrilled to have the chance to revise more than just a bad nose job or breast implants.
Thanks to his eight seasons on Botched and Heather's time as a Bravo housewife, "I know that we have this platform," Terry explained, "and the more accepting and supportive we are to them publicly, which is the way we are for sure, hopefully that sends the message out."
Having recently relocated from their Newport Beach digs some 50 miles north to Beverly Hills, "This is a better place for my kids," said Terry, noting the "rainbow shines brighter up here than it does in Orange County."
And these days their life together really is sunshine and rainbows.
"I'm here in the right place at the right time," insisted Terry, "doing the right thing with this most fabulous mother and wife Heather Dubrow, as my guide." Together they've created quite the story. Check out the highlights from their shared life.
