The Last Leghost Adam Hills has said he was ‘unsure’ how to strike the balance between grieving and celebrating the Queen in the Channel 4 programme.

The late-night comedy show had been pulled from the TV schedule last Friday the day after Her Majesty’s death was confirmed by Buckingham Palace.

Releasing a statement at the time, Adam said on Twitter: ‘We’ve decided not to do an episode of @thelastleg tonight. It just doesn’t feel right.’

This Friday’s episode of the popular show, which featured guests Judi Love and David Harewood, was a special tribute to Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Opening The Last Leg, Adam said he wanted to’ offer condolences to anyone and everything affected by the death of the Queen.’

He then explained the decision to cancel the previous week’s installment, saying the ‘night after the Queen’s death wasn’t the right time.’

Adam added he was ‘still unsure’ how to approach the first show since Her Majesty’s death because the nation is in a state of mourning, but also people ‘want cheering up.’

‘We’re going to try and do that tonight,’ he said. ‘And celebrate the Queen’s long and happy reign in the right way.’

Both Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker paid emotional tributes to her Majesty, with the latter describing her as ‘iconic’ and a ‘comfort in our lives.’

He added: ‘She was the one person you’d see over Christmas and not argue with.’

Adam recalled meeting her at The Royal Variety Show and making a joke during his performance about having a ‘real Christmas’ in his native Australia.

The comedian recalled the joked didn’t go down well with the audience, leading the Queen to tell him ‘the audience were very helpful, weren’t they?’

Before parting ways, Adam said Her Majesty asked him if he had flown all the way to Oz, to which he responded he was returning there the following day.

Praising her sense of humour, Adam revealed she turned to him and said: ‘So you can have a real Christmas?’, making the 52-year-old giggle.

The Last Leg wasn’t the only show to react to the Queen’s death on Friday, with the stars of Gogglebox bursting into tears over the emotional news coverage.

Among them was Izzi who expressed how she felt complete ‘disbelief’ over the Queen’s death, while Amani admitted that it never ‘crossed her mind’ that Queen Elizabeth II would no longer be around.

The Last Leg continues on Friday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
