Every year, the proud cast members of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette embark on a quest to find everlasting love — or, a few hundred thousand Instagram followers and a new source of income. But, with most of the past seasons of the show ending in heartbreak (insert Grant Ellis, Jenn Tran, Rachel Recchia and Gerry Turner), we’re more cynical than ever that the show can actually lead to true love.

We wish we could say there was a clear pattern, and that some of these couples were obviously doomed from the start. But honestly, there’s no magic recipe for making a reality TV romance last.
