Christina Lauren knows what makes a good beach read.
After all, Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, the BFFs behind the BookTok favorite author, have been churning out best-sellers like Love and Other Words, The Unhoneymooners and The Paradise Problem for well over a decade.
“It's something that just immediately grabs you and it makes you want to just stay out and keep reading and pick it up every time you have a second,” Lauren told E! News of the perfect waterfront read in an exclusive joint interview with Christina. “I love that feeling so much of being completely absorbed in a book on the beach.”
And the rom-com queens didn’t hesitate to reveal the books think everyone needs to be packing in their beach bags this summer.
Chief among them? These Summer Storms by Sarah MacLean (out July 8) which Christina gushed is a classic “rich people behaving badly” story about a dysfunctional family dealing with the death of their patriarch.
"They read the will, and he has set a bunch of things they have to do in order to find out what they get," she teased. "Because it is Sarah McLean, there is also a sexy romance weaved into the middle of this. I think it's going to be that thing where you pick up the book, and when you look up again, like, four hours have gone by.”
Another must-read for the duo is Can't Get Enoughby Kennedy Ryan.
“It's an instant New York Times bestseller for a reason,” Lauren noted. “She is so such a beautiful writer, and she has that kind of immersive prose that immediately pulls you in.”
And then there’s Nana Malone's Gold Coast Dilemma, which Lauren admitted, “Just had me laughing out loud. I love that book so much.”
But when it comes to a book they foresee making waves on the beach in the coming months?
“I think everybody's new romantasy obsession is going to be Rose in Chains by Julie Soto,” Lauren predicted of the first installment of the novelist’s Evermore Trilogy (out July 2). “That's going to be the book that people can't stop talking about.”
While books are always on Christina and Lauren’s mind, this summer they’re urging fans to pair their reads with a Sweet Topped Lemonade from Sonic. For them, teaming up with Sonic—which has partnered with First Books to donate 100,000 books to low-income communities as part of its Limeades for Learning initiative—was, as Lauren put it, a “no-brainer.”
“It's such an easy way to support public education,” she continued. “Any drink, whether it's a soda, a shake, one of these sweet top lemonades, anything that people buy, the donation goes straight to public education through the lemonades for learning initiative.”
And as the Sweet Top Lemonades come in a trio of flavors—classic lemonade, strawberry lemonade and blueberry lavender lemonade—the novelists broke down which kind of beach read they’d pair with each drink.
“To me, strawberry lemonade kind of reminds me of second chance romance,” Christina told E!, “so I would pick a Kennedy Ryan book because she does that trope amazing.”
“Then classic lemonade reminds me of enemies to lovers,” she continued, before Lauren chimed in with “I’m gonna say Love, Theoretically, by Ali Hazelwood.”
As for blueberry lavender, Christina noted the flavors “seem to go together, even though you wouldn't think of it.” so it makes me think of friends to lovers.”
And Lauren immediately knew it would pair well with “Gold Coast Dilemma by Nana Malone, because they're so different, these two characters, but they go so well together.”
For them, summer and reading already go hand-in-hand so toss in a cold drink and you’re in for the perfect beach day.
“You take a lemonade, take a book, you got your set,” Lauren emphasized. “It doesn't matter what you're reading, you're on the beach.”
