What on earth, I found myself wondering on June 15 night as we waited and waited for the outcome of what had seemed like a gripping Canadian Grand Prix to be decided by the stewards. What would the great Gilles Villeneuve have made of the race held at the circuit named in his honour?

Well, just like us, he would have relished the five-way contest between George Russell, Max Verstappen, Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The prospect of so many of the top cars battling it out in the final laps was simply nail-biting, especially as you sometimes get follow-my-leader races in which a DRS train develops. That might have been the case further back in a closely matched midfield, but you sensed here that anything might happen at the sharp end.
