Titaníque's Marla Mindelle Reveals How Céline Dion's Inner Circle Reacted to the Musical "Love Letter"
A new day has come for Marla Mindelle following the success of Titaníque.
As the off-Broadway musical, a hilarious reimagining of 1997's Titanic film with Céline Dion serving as narrator, closes in the United States and Australia in late June, Mindelle—who originated Dion's character and co-authored the show alongside actor Constantine Rousouli and director Tye Blue—is reflecting on the production's tremendous run.
"It feels really, really bittersweet," the actress recently told E! News. "This was only supposed to be a three-month run. If you were to tell me that all of this would've happened in just three years, I would've laughed in your face, because it is incredulous."
The show, which debuted at New York's Asylum Theatre in 2022 before sailing over to the Daryl Roth Theatre and beyond, has even caught the attention of those close to Dion.
"Her music publishers, her lawyers, her backup dancers, her makeup artists, her physician from Canada, her sister went to see the Montreal production," Mindelle shared. "And they all say the same thing, that she would absolutely love it."
"We did this out of the fact that we loved Titanic growing up, but we all f--king love Céline Dion," the writer noted. "She was my touchstone growing up, I aspired to sing like her. So it's really a love letter to her and making sure that we protect and honor her legacy."
For Mindelle and Rousouli, adding Dion's essence—and beloved songs—brought a multitude of layers to the production.
"We didn't necessarily want to retell the story," Mindelle said of Titanic. "It's just when we added the character of Céline Dion as the leader of the ship, and Céline Dion is descended from her own quirky French-Canadian multiverse, it's like, well, what did she think happened?"
"What if she thinks that like Tina Turner came back to life and plays the iceberg?" she continued. "Basically, Celine Dion in Titaníque is a full-blown conspiracy theorist. But because she's so quirky and so genuine and so heartfelt, you can't help but go along with the story."

And over the course of its award-winning run, Titaníque has attracted a star-studded crowd, including Titanic's Victor Garber.
"There was one week, Billy Eichner, Neil Patrick Harris, Maya Rudolph, Amy Poehler, Margot Robbie, Lorne Michaels from SNL came," Mindelle recalled. "It was so cool, it changed our lives. Connie and I got to audition for SNL."
It even led to a subsequent collaboration with Robbie, who reached out after seeing the show.
"We worked on my next musical together," she added, referencing The Big Gay Jamboree. "There was a moment in time where every single celebrity, Matt Bomer, Cara Delevingne, they were all here in the audience, sneakily singing 'My Heart Will Go On' with us."
And although Titaníque will continue in Canada and Europe, the end of its run in the U.S. and Australia closes a meaningful chapter for Mindelle, who—along with Rousouli—returned to the show for its final weeks in NYC.
"It’s crazy, it's sad," she told E!. "But honestly, I feel like it's a ship that doesn't sink. It goes on and on forever. I feel like this is actually the first of this chapter, but I feel like it's about to lead many, many more lives, and I'm excited to see what happens afterwards."
