A wandering toddler in China ended up falling into a ditch after pushing past an unsecured barrier on a walkway.

According to video footage of the incident shared online, the incident occurred on Aug 28 at around 4pm along Yongzhen Road in Yunnan, China.

The young child appears to be unattended and is seen walking around the safety barrier while his father stands by the roadside.

The toddler subsequently pushes the barrier forward and falls into the 2m-deep pit, reported China News.

Startled by the commotion, the father rushed to rescue his child together with the help of staff from a nearby eatery.

Ma (transliterated), the owner of a restaurant along the road, said the bottom parts of the safety barrier appeared to be unsecured.

She instructed her staff to bring stools, which were stacked on top of each other, so that the toddler's father could descend into the ditch.

Multiple staff were seen standing by and helping to carry the toddler once his father hoisted him out of the hole.

Photos of the ditch show a deep pit filled with mud and loose wires.

The toddler did not sustain any serious injuries, reported China News, adding that the staff brought him into the restaurant to wash up before his father took him home.

According to Ma, her staff later placed stools around the safety barrier after the incident to warn passersby about the construction works.
