Tom Cruise’s Look Sparks Dialogue on Hollywood’s Expectations Around Aging
Aging in Hollywood isn’t just difficult for women; it’s also becoming a hot topic around male celebrities. The conversation still primarily centers on female stars, but Tom Cruise is now discovering that his face is up for discussion.
The discourse began on ITV’s The Jonathan Ross Show in the U.K. when the TV host compared Brad Pitt’s looks to Cruise — the men are only a year apart in age: Pitt is 61 and Cruise is 62. Ross described Pitt as looking “incredible” and someone who has “aged remarkably,” according to The Independent.Cruise, he claimed, has undergone “a bit of tweaking.”
“He’s definitely got a ton of filler in that face… He’s got that kind of Play-Doh face that people get when they have a lot of filler,” Ross added.
Oof. It’s hard to hear this topic around women and men because in 2025, people should know better than to comment on anyone’s bodies and faces. Of course, Ross wasn’t done with the aging conversation.
“To be honest, I wish he hadn’t done it because he’s got such a great face. He was a naturally very handsome man when young, and he would be a handsome man when older,” he continued. “He’s still – he’s not unattractive – but it doesn’t look that much like him anymore. You can see it doesn’t look natural. It’s not because they don’t look their age, it’s because the shape of the face now looks somewhat different.”
In October 2021, Cruise’s face was discussed for weeks after an appearance at a San Francisco Giants game. He appeared to be swollen and puffy, leading fans to say he looked “unrecognizable.” Dr. Alice Henshaw spoke to The Sunabout her professional assessment of the situation, even though the actor was not her patient.
“Tom definitely looks swollen and puffy, which could be due to filler, post-procedure swelling, or weight gain,” she said. “Often, surgical procedures such as a platysmal plasty, or neck lift, combined with a mid-facelift could create this type of swelling in these areas, and scars are easily disguised.”
Cruise keeps his private life under wraps, so it’s unlikely that he will ever discuss any personal aesthetic procedure with his fans — and that’s his right. Still, many celebrities are open about their cosmetic enhancements while others like Jamie Lee Curtis are begging fans to let them age gracefully. No matter what stars decide to do, the pressure around aging in Hollywood looms in the background, and Cruise doesn’t seem immune to the criticism.
