The UK could see temperatures of up to 26C (79F) at the weekend in a spell of unusually warm October weather.

It will not be blue skies and sunshine for everyone, with heavy and persistent rain expected in Scotland.

A Met Office yellow warning for heavy rain is in force over much of the nation from Friday night until 06:00 BST on Sunday.

There will be some "stark contrasts" across the UK, BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor said.

There could even be snow over the highest Scottish mountains, he said.

"While it will feel like late summer in the south, it will be more like late autumn/early winter for many in Scotland.

"Not only will there be persistent rain for many but temperatures will struggle to reach 10C for a fair few."
