UMS water crisis: Transparency, accountability questioned

KOTA KINABALU (May 29): Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) publicity chief Nicholas Ban expresses grave concern over the ongoing water crisis at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), which has disrupted the lives of students and staff for an extended period.
“This crisis has once again highlighted the critical need for transparent and accountable management in addressing fundamental needs such as clean water access,” he said in a statement today.
“While the intervention by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in bringing attention to this issue is noted, we must ask why the UMS management has not taken proactive steps to mitigate the impact of water shortages on its campus,” he added.
Nicholas raised these questions: • Was there a delay in reporting the water shortage to the relevant authorities? • Did the university management fail to activate contingency measures, such as water tankers, when supply levels dropped to critical lows? • Has the management implemented proper monitoring systems to ensure early detection of water supply issues? • And most importantly, is there any undue influence or external interference that has led to a breakdown in communication or response at UMS?
