US soldier who 'defected' to North Korea during guided tour had just been released from SOUTH Korean jail on assault charges and was being escorted home to America when he fled
The American soldier who has been detained in North Korea was recently released from prison in South Korea after he was held on assault charges, it has emerged.
The soldier, named as Private 2nd Class Travis King, crossed the border 'willfully and without authorization' on Tuesday during a sightseers' tour of the Joint Security Area, US officials confirmed.
