Starcloud, a startup developing space-based data centers, said on Aug. 21 that it had raised US$250 million at a US$2.3 billion valuation as it aimed to expand AI infrastructure with orbital data centers.
Starcloud launched an orbital AI data center using Nvidia H100 graphics processing units, suggesting the company may be beyond the concept stage.
The fundraising follows SpaceX’s initial public offering, which renewed investor interest in the space industry, including areas such as orbital data centers. Multiple startups are pursuing orbital data centers.
Commercial rollout could still face regulatory hurdles.
Space-based data centers may require Federal Communications Commission spectrum and satellite licenses, while larger constellations have drawn scrutiny over orbital debris and environmental impacts.
