US trade deal won’t allow free sharing of personal data: ID gov’t

The Indonesian government has confirmed that the trade agreement with the United States, announced by the White House on July 22, 2025, will not allow unrestricted sharing of personal data.
Instead, it aims to create a legal framework for secure and regulated cross-border data flow.
Meutya Hafid, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital, said that the agreement includes legal safeguards to protect Indonesian citizens’ personal data when using digital services from US-based companies.
This includes services such as search engines and ecommerce platforms.
She highlighted that data transfers must comply with national laws and safeguard individual rights.
Hafid explained that the cross-border transfer of personal data will only be allowed for legitimate and legally justified purposes.
