Via has announced a major strategic agreement with Waymo, Google’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary, to provide the technology backbone for Waymo’s autonomous taxi service.
Via, the company headquartered in New York that has developed a platform for managing and integrating public transportation, will initially deploy its platform in Chandler, Arizona, enabling features such as pooling multiple passengers into a single ride.
The companies plan to expand the integration to other US cities in the future.
Waymo operates autonomous taxis in several US cities, including San Francisco, and reports providing hundreds of thousands of rides weekly.
Via raised US$493 million in its recent New York Stock Exchange IPO at a US$3.7 billion valuation, with its market cap now at US$4 billion.
The company derives about 90% of its revenue from government agencies and serves 689 customers, primarily U.S. transportation agencies.
Via employs nearly 1,000 people and reported a US$429 million revenue run rate, but it remains unprofitable.
