Uber Cup: Malaysia lose to Taiwan 1-4

CHENGDU: Malaysia went down 1-4 to Taiwan in their opening Group B match in the Uber Cup Finals on Sunday (April 28).

Goh Jin Wei battled hard against world No. 5 Tai Tzu-ying before narrowly losing 19-21, 20-22 in the first singles.

Scratch pair Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee then gave the team hope of causing an upset when they toppled world No. 24 Hsu Ya-ching-Lin Wan-ching 21-19, 21-17 in the first doubles.

In the second singles, K. Letshanaa fought her heart out against Wen Chi-hsu but went down 21-13, 17-21, 16-21 in 57 minutes to hand Taiwan the advantage again.

In the second doubles, young pair Tan Zhing Yi-Ho Lo Ee had to win to keep the tie alive but they could not rise to the occasion and lost out 17-21, 11-21 to Hung Ling-fang-Teng Chun-hsun.

Wong Ling Ching then gave a good account of herself before going down 17-21, 20-22 to Sung Shuo-yun in the third singles.

Malaysia now face an uphill battle to progress to the quarter-finals as they need to beat favourites Thailand in their next group match on Monday (April 29).
