Dutch regulators fined Uber Technologies 825 million euros ($963 million) over automated systems used to suspend driver accounts in Europe from 2020 to 2022 without properly informing drivers.
It is the second-largest penalty under the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority said the case covered temporary fraud waitlisting and ratings-based deactivations. The authority said Uber violated drivers’ right to be informed about automated decision-making around their accounts.
Uber said it ended the practices in 2021 and 2022 and will appeal.
Uber’s European headquarters are in the Netherlands, making the Dutch watchdog its lead General Data Protection Regulation regulator.
The only larger General Data Protection Regulation penalty was Meta Platforms’ 1.2 billion euros (US$1.4 billion) fine by Irish regulators over transfers of European user data to the US.
The Dutch watchdog also led an earlier Uber General Data Protection Regulation case over US data transfers, resulting in a 290 million euros (US$339 million) fine in 2024.
