Varsity student killed, sister injured in North-South Expressway crash

KUALA KANGSAR: A Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) student was killed and her sister seriously injured after their car was involved in an accident at KM257 of the North-South Expressway (northbound) today.

The deceased was identified as L. Nimala Shangkeri, 21, from Kamunting, Taiping.

It is learnt that the car, which was travelling in the right lane, suddenly went out of control, skidded to the left, crashed into a road barrier and overturned in the left lane. A lorry travelling behind in the left lane collided with it.

Acting Perak Fire and Rescue Department operations chief Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said they received a distress call at 8.10am.

"Firemen from Meru rushed to the scene and found two occupants in the car, with neither pinned to their seats. The 27-year-old driver sustained injuries, while the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer," he said.

He said the deceased was taken to Kuala Kangsar Hospital for a post-mortem, while the injured victim was sent to the same hospital for treatment.

It is learnt that the 69-year-old lorry driver escaped unhurt.
