Veteran Local Actor Yong Ser Pin Reveals How Public Transport Helps Him Bond With His Grandsons
Sometimes it's not easy for grandparents to bond with their grandkids due to the generation gap, but has veteran local actor Yong Ser Pin found a solution to that?
In new short film The Morning Call, the final short film of the SG60 anthology Kopitiam Days, the 77-year-old star shared many heartwarming scenes with his on-screen granddaughter, played by child actress Jennifer Wilkinson.
Ser Pin shared in an interview with Zaobao.sg that he and Jennifer relied on observing each other to communicate and build their onscreen relationship as neither of them tend to speak much on set.
He also "really enjoyed" one of the scenes they had on a bus where they opened up to each other in the film.
Who knew that in real life, public transport has a part to play in Ser Pin's adorable relationship with his two grandsons — aged nine and seven — too.
"My grandsons love buses and trains, so whenever I see related videos online, I’ll forward it to them," he gushed.
According to the actor, his grandkids visit him every week, and they have an agreement to only speak Mandarin when they meet.
The reason? He hopes the kids can use the opportunity to practise Chinese.
“I told them I don’t speak English, so they have to use their brains and try to speak Mandarin when talking to me. Fortunately, they don’t resist it much, and have no problem expressing themselves," he said.
Despite frequently sending videos to his grandsons, it's not to say Ser Pin is on social media all the time. He revealed that he doesn't use TikTok, and although though his children did set up a Facebook account for him, he also rarely uses it to share about his personal life.
“I might scroll through YouTube occasionally, and I’ll look at others’ Facebook posts. I don’t let people see mine though. Seems unfair, right? Haha! But I feel it’s better to keep a low profile," he chuckled.
On the other hand, he prefers to do things the old-school way, and collects books, calligraphy paintings as well as coins at home.
That said, Ser Pin has been learning to declutter in the past few years.
“Living in memories all the time isn’t necessarily good, but it’s hard to let go of old photos, because memories with old friends are all in those pictures," he said.
We get it, those must hold such sentimental value to him.
