PETALING JAYA: Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman rode to a perfect National Day gift when he took his first win in the Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) ASB1000 season at the Mandalika International Circuit in Indonesia on Sunday (Aug 31).

The 40-year-old veteran racer has not had the smoothest of seasons, but his ride in Race 2 of the fourth round saw him make a stunning comeback to the top spot of the podium for A1 Energy BMW Racing Team.

"It’s unbelievable," said Azlan, who won the championship in 2019.

"When I look back at my journey with the team, it’s been tough this season. I struggled with form, the bike, and with myself.

"Coming back to Mandalika wasn’t easy either. Last year, I crashed here and had a highside during an eight-hour race.

"I lost some motivation, but I told myself that if I can’t win, at least improve and enjoy the circuit."

Azlan, who came in fourth in Race 1 on Saturday, certainly did enjoy the circuit as he pushed hard against second-place finisher Keito Abe, executing a smooth overtake to snatch the lead from the Japanese rider.

Indonesia’s Andi Farid Izdihar took third for Astra Honda Racing Team.

"I’m so lucky to get this win. I must thank my team and crew who worked tirelessly.

"This victory is for them, for everyone who has supported me, and most importantly, for Malaysia. Happy National Day!" said Azlan.

Meanwhile, it was heartbreak for Race 1 winner Hafizh Syahrin Abdullah, who suffered a bad crash and was forced out of the race.

The JDT Racing Team rider caught a highside on lap six and was thrown off his bike.

Although he walked away alright, it ended his National Day hopes of a double victory as he was leading the race up to that point.

The penultimate round of the ARRC will take place next at the Sepang International Circuit from Oct 10-12.
