WORKER SAYS HE SHOULD BE PAID FOR GOING TO OFF-HOURS TEAM BUILDING ACTIVITIES
Employers should be required to pay you during off-hours team activities they plan “for fun.” This is not a perk, it is overtime work.
Like no, I don’t want to take up my weekday night evening after work to do a trendy activity that I think is dumb and spend more time with you, boss, I don’t care how nice you are.
Sure, you could not go. But there is a price to pay. If you own your own business, please stop doing this. No one has the heart to tell you they don’t want to (for free).
Just make an excuse and don’t go…? If you aren’t paid you don’t have to go.
(OP) There’s an unspoken consequence to that, especially on a small team. Also, this is a post about the unsustainable principle that because these kinds of activities are “enjoyable” they are not expected to have additional compensation. If it’s a work related activity and your boss is asking you to spend time on something, it should always be paid.
