Wang Yuqing's Dad Would Cane Him For Not Topping Exams; Regrets Never Telling Dad "I Love You" Before His Death
Who knew Jeanette Aw and Wang Yuqing are so close?
For her recent Father's Day (June 15) special of her video series Unscripted JA, Jeanette, 45, had the 64-year-old ex-Mediacorp actor on as guest.
We now know Jeanette addresses Yuqing as "Yuqing Pa Pa" (aka "Daddy Yuqing" in Mandarin) after the actor played her dad in 2009 Mediacorp drama Together.
In the video, Yuqing, who now runs his own restaurant, Eat Here, Drink Here Cafe & Bistro, personally whipped up a meal for his on-screen daughter while they talked about their relationship.
The two revealed that they don't contact each other regularly, though Jeanette would send Yuqing a message every Chinese New Year or on special occasions.
"When you call me 'Daddy', it warms my heart. I would even brag to my partner and say: 'Look, Jeanette Aw called me 'Daddy' leh'," Yuqing said proudly.
The duo then opened up about their respective dads.
Jeanette first shared that she has an "okay" relationship with her father, who is a very strict person. That description unexpectedly struck a chord with Yuqing.
"Even when I passed my exams, I would still get caned because I didn't get number one. The mentality in the past is that you had to be first and be better than everyone else," he recalled.
That experience shaped Yuqing to become a very introverted person.
"Even after I became an artiste, I was still the same. It was only when I stepped into the insurance industry when I stopped acting like 'silence is golden'," said Yuqing.
The actor left showbiz in 1995 to sell insurance and is now a full-time insurance agent with Manulife Singapore.
Yuqing acknowledged that his dad's behaviour was what stopped him from doing bad things.
"At least we wouldn't be led astray and go down the wrong path. The bad thing, though, is that it may have made us feel inferior and less brave," he said.
Yuqing now understands that his father was so strict only because he loved his children.
The actor's biggest regret is that he never told his dad "I love you" before he passed on.
"An 'I love you' can be exchanged for so much happiness. Why do you think [your parents] worked so hard for you and were so strict with you?" he said, moving Jeanette to tears.
Thankfully, Yuqing's sons won't live with the same regret.
The actor has been married three times. His first was to actress Chen Bifeng from 1987 to 1990. In 1991, he married actress Tracer Wong but they split up in 1993. He was married to Liang Liling from 2001 to 2011. He has two sons and a stepson, local actor Xavier Ong, from his third marriage. Yuqing now has a girlfriend Norah Zhang, 51.
He shared that he and his sons interact like brothers, and that they would address him as "bro" —something he couldn't get used to at first.
He is, however, is consoled that his sons would still tell him "I love you" every day, and that they are very close.
