If you have an expensive car, you’d probably want to take photos with it and post them online. But if you’re the son of a famous celebrity, you might want to think twice.

Two years ago, the 27-year-old son of Wayne Lai, Ching Kiu, received backlash after sharing a photo on Facebook of himself posing in front of a black Chevrolet Camaro in a carpark.

The luxury car is believed to cost between HK$300K and HK$500K (S$52K to S$87K) in Hong Kong.

Ching Kiu was immediately labelled a showoff, with many criticising him for flaunting his father’s wealth.

Previously, Wayne was said to have gifted Ching Kiu a S$500K Lamborghini and a Rolex Daytona. It was also reported that Wayne gives Ching Kiu a monthly allowance of HK$200K (S$32.7K).

Believe it or not, up until today, people still haven’t forgotten the incident. At a recent promotional event, the 61-year-old actor was once again asked about his son’s spending habits.

And Wayne finally took the opportunity to defend his son.

He first clarified that expensive things in the photos did not belong to his son.

“Since you brought it up, let me take this chance to clarify. First, all those things are mine. I didn’t buy them for him,” he stressed.

“Second, he wasn’t showing off his wealth at all. He was simply sharing photos on a private social media account among friends.”

The actor added that once photos are shared online, it is extremely easy for people to dig them up.

“He absolutely didn’t have the mentality of wanting to show off,” he emphasised.
