SINGAPORE - It will be a wet start to September as thundery showers and gusty winds are expected on several mornings in the first half of the month.

In a statement on Sept 1 , the Meteorological Service Singapore said south-west monsoon conditions will continue to prevail, with the total rainfall in the first fortnight slated to be above average over most parts of Singapore.

On some days, moderate and heavy thundery showers may also happen in the late morning and afternoon, it said, adding that winds will predominantly come from the south-east or south-west.

Despite the rain, daily maximum temperatures will likely range between 32 and 34 deg C, the weatherman said.

In the last two weeks of August, about half of the island experienced above average rainfall, with the area around Clementi registering an amount that was 128 per cent above average.

In contrast, the area around Changi experienced rainfall that was 40 per cent below average.

The highest amount of rainfall recorded in a single day during the second fortnight of August was on Aug 24 , when 104.2mm of rain fell over Ulu Pandan .

This was due to a passing Sumatra squall that had brought widespread thundery showers and gusty winds over the Republic in the early morning.

Such squalls had also brought thundery showers and gusty winds in the early morning on some days.

The daily maximum temperatures ranged between 32 and 34 deg C.

Ang Mo Kio registered the hottest daily maximum temperature on Aug 22 , when a temperature of 34.7 deg C was recorded.
