National Day Parade (mewatch, Aug 9, Channel 5, 6.10pm, live)

To mark Singapore’s 61st birthday, this year’s celebration — themed ‘Go Beyond’ — takes place at the National Stadium for the first time since 2016. Expect 36 artistes, more than 2,600 performers, and in one spectacular segment, 300 drones. Hopefully, the latter will make up for the absence of the Red Lions and mobile column. More details here. Hosting duties fall to Joakim Gomez, Hafidz Rahman, Udaya Soundari, Xixi Lim, and Gurmit Singh as hosts, while William Xavier, aka Mr X, returns as the Voice of NDP. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s National Day Message will air on Aug 8, 9.30pm, with an encore the next day at 5.55pm.

When his Japanese online girlfriend goes MIA, a withdrawn gamer (occasional PM Wong impersonator, Shawn Thia) hops on the first plane to Tokyo to find her — only to be drawn into the shadowy underworld. Golden Kamuy’s Anna Yamada plays a fellow gamer and his guide. But is she who she claims to be? This six-part drama, a Singapore-Japan co-production, also stars Chen Hanwei.

The latest from Lion Mums creators arrives immediately after the NDP… no pressure. This 65-episode drama follows three rookie prison officers — played by Tasha Low, Clement Yeo, and Zhin Sadali — as they balance their professional and personal lives. The series also features Noah Yap, Cassandra Spykerman, Brian Ng, and Mathialagan. Subsequent episodes from Aug 10: mewatch, every Monday; Channel 5, Mon-Thur, 8.30pm.

For those still suffering from World Cup withdrawals, here’s some relief. I’m perfectly okay with Ted Lasso ending after three seasons. I’m happy to watch those 34 episodes over and over. But no, they want to have another go at it. Please don’t suck. This time, Coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) brings his wisdom on a women’s team in the Richmond area — the second-division Lady Greyhounds. (If you want more female football action, check out Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Soccer, in cinemas on Aug 6.)

Are in the mood for an old-school slasher? This bundle of screams hails from Se7en written Andrew Kevin Walker and is about a cop (Barbarian’s Georgina Campbell) hunting down a — spoiler alert! — psycho killer (James Preston Rogers) who killed her husband. Good luck.

Dear Ms: A Revolution in Print (HBO Max, Aug 6)

A deep dive into the legacy of Ms., the iconic American feminist magazine co-founded by journalist and activist Gloria Steinem, through some of its most memorable covers, interviews with its writers and contributors, and never-before-seen archival footage. It got me thinking: maybe I should get cracking on that 8 DAYS documentary.

Louis Leterrier (Fast X) directs this sci-fi thriller about a family of four— with Wagner Moura and Greta Leeas father and mother — trapped in their own home by an ominous force. Quick, report to Mothership! Is this the work of aliens or some secret government experiment gone awry? (The plot sounds a lot like last year’s Brick, doesn’t it?) Or has their home been transported to another dimension? (Like what happened in The End of Oak Street, in cinemas on Aug 13.)
