Old & Dangerous (mewatch, Channel 8, 9pm, from July 27)

The latest Ch 8 drama — hailing from Wawa Pictures (so expect a slicker look than our typical in-house productions) — stars Chen Shucheng, Richard Low, Zhu Houren, Wang Yuqing, and Li Wenhai as retired Special Forces badasses reuniting for one special mission when one of their loved ones falls prey to scammers. Dear bad guys, you called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind. We think. The 20-part series also features Golden Horse Award nominee Hong Huifang, Constance Song, Priscelia Chan, and one-time Jackie Chan co-star Pan Lingling.

Furious (Disney+, July 27)

New Girl creator Liz Meriwether ventures into dark territory with this eight-part procedural starring Emmy Rossum as an FBI agent (with a very messed-up backstory) pursuing a serial killer (Lola Petticrew) who appears to be targeting the rich. It’s based on the Debra Winger-Theresa Russell-led 1987 thriller Black Widow, but it also draws influences from Silence of the Lambs and Mindhunters, as well as the Jeffrey Epstein saga.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (Disney+, July 29)

As much as I enjoyed the first movie, I wasn’t that big a fan. (I simply saw it as a chick flick set in the fashion world… give me a break, I was young and foolish.) The sequel, however, I found strangely poignant. This time watching Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly steer Runway magazine while fending off shifting trends, meddling owners, and demanding advertisers made me think about 8 DAYS’ own pivot from print to digital. It’s hard not to get misty-eyed thinking about it. Sorry, where was I? If you’ve worked in print before, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is going to bring back memories. That, and Simon Baker’s hair.

The Devil’s Mouth (Prime Video, July 29)

The Devil is busy this week. If The Descent and 47 Meters Down: Uncaged hooked up and had a kid, The Devil’s Mouth would be that bundle of joy (or nightmare?). Directed by Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy Island, Truth or Dare), this thriller follows a group of friends (played by Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, Tommie Rose, and Nico Hiraga) stranded in a flooded cave off the coast of Thailand… where what appears to be a shark is waiting. The trailer is appetising: it looks more terrifying than Netflix’sThrash. That’s a good start.

Fired Up! (HBO Max, July 31)

This 12-part Taiwanese HBO Original — an adaptation of the 2020 K-drama Itaewon Class — stars Mandopop singer Eric Chou as a young man trying to uncover the truth about his father’s death while keeping the family restaurant afloat. This isn’t the first time Itaewon Class has been remade: the Japanese version, Roppongi Class, came out in 2022. Mediacorp, let’s do a Singapore edition and make the greedy landlords the villains! Can you see it? Just a suggestion.

Wild Sing (Netflix, July 30)

Get ready to dance your ass off with this hit Korean comedy starring Gang Dong-won, Um Tae-goo and Park Ji-hyun as former members of Triangle, a chart-topping dance group in the aughts, who are invited to reunite for a performance. But will their personal baggage get in the way? The music for the fictional group is produced by K-pop powerhouses Shim Eun-ji (TWICE, SHINee, IU, and ITZY) and KASS (NMIXX, GOT7, and ITZY), with choreography by Yang Wook of Nana Company, who came up with the moves for supergroup SSAK3.

Let’s head over to Japan for this quirky comedy about the good people who must put up with us when we first arrive. Shuri stars as a new customs officer of GATE24 (GATE24 (Global Airport Task Enforcement), a ragtag border unit. She’s brilliant at sieving out contraband from luggage, but a noob when it comes to dealing with people. Good thing her colleagues (Rihito Itagaki and Gordon Maeda) have her back. New episodes every Sunday.
