Ballard (Prime Video, July 9)

This Bosch: Legacy spin-off stars Maggie Q as LAPD homicide detective Renée Ballard, the leader of a new and underfunded cold case unit. As she and her team investigate long-forgotten unsolved cases — including a murdered John Doe and a string of homicides possibly tied to a serial killer — she encounters forces within the department that don’t want her to succeed.

Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story (Disney+, July 11)

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws turns 50! While eco-conservationists now critique it for demonising sharks, the film’s pop culture impact is undeniable. This retrospective doc by longtime Spielberg archivist Laurent Bouzereau features interviews with Spielberg, filmmakers like Guillermo del Toro, JJ Abrams, and Jordan Peele, and scientists weighing in on the movie’s mixed legacy in shark conservation.

German sci-fi thriller starring Matthias Schweighöfer (Army of the Dead) and Ruby O. Fee as a couple who find themselves entombed in their apartment by a mysterious black brick wall. What’s going on? Is it an alien invasion, a clandestine experiment, or a twisted game show? This movie will bring back those home-quarantine memories during the pandemic.

Rage (Max, July 11)

This eight-part limited series from Spain tells the story of five women — Candela Peña, Carmen Machi, Nathalie Poza, Pilar Castro, and Cecilia Roth — who face extreme situations such as extortion, oppression, and manipulation. Their individual conflicts intertwine, triggering a butterfly effect that ultimately leads to a shared catharsis.

Anora (Max, July 12)

This year’s Best Picture Oscar winner stars Mikey Madison as a stripper who impulsively marries the son (Mark Eydelshteyn) of a Russian oligarch. But guess what? His family wants the marriage annulled. Cue hilarity and heartbreak. The film also took home Oscars for Best Actress (Madison), Best Director (Sean Baker), Best Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.
