It is driven largely by lifestyle and environment: round-the-clock air-conditioning and fans lower humidity and blow tears away, long hours on screens reduce blinking, and wearing contact lenses for too long soaks up the eye’s moisture. Despite its name, dry eye doesn’t always feel dry. Symptoms can include irritation, tiredness, soreness, burning, stinging and even watery eyes. Several common beliefs about dry eye are wrong. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, reading in dim light does not damage your eyes; it only tires them temporarily. Concentrated reading can still make dry eye symptoms worse, because people blink less, and each blink spreads a fresh layer of tears across the eye. Dry eye is also not simply a case of tears “drying up.” The TFOS DEWS II report explains that tears have three layers: an oily layer that slows evaporation, a watery layer that hydrates, and a mucin layer that helps tears spread evenly. Dry eye can come from producing too few tears, from tears evaporating too quickly, or very often both. Watery eyes don’t mean the problem has cleared up either. When eyes get too dry, they produce reflex tears that are mostly water with no oil, so they run off instead of coating the eye. References: 1. American Academy of Ophthalmology.
