On New Year’s Day, D and I rose at daybreak, bundled our dog and gear into the camper van and drove 30 minutes to the beach. It is summer here in Perth, and we wanted to catch the morning sea breeze before the midday heat.

At the beach in Coogee, we claimed a sea-facing spot for the van, then cooked bacon and eggs on the public barbecue plate.
