For your consideration...

Person of Interest: Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel (Photo: Warner Bros Television)

Person of Interest (Netflix, May 12)

Jonathan Nolan’s first TV series — co-produced by JJ Abrams — finally lands on Netflix. The prophetic 2011 show stars Michael Emerson (Lost) as a tech billionaire who invents an AI surveillance system (aka The Machine) so advanced that it can predict future crimes. (Tom Cruise nicked the premise for the last two Mission: Impossible movies.)  To keep the digital clairvoyant from falling into the wrong hands, he goes off the grid where he puts The Machine to good use. (A selfless tech bro — what a radical concept!). Jim Caviezel co-stars as his muscle, a former CIA operative. After a six-season run, Nolan continued his AI obsession with HBO’s Westworld.

The Punisher: One Last Kill: Jon Bernthal (Photo: Marvel Televison)

The Punisher: One Last Kill (Disney+, May 13)

Where the f*** was Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) when Daredevil needed him most in Born Again? Nowhere. And he shows up in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (in cinemas July 30)? What the blue balls is going on here?  Maybe this Marvel TV special — directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard), who also co-wrote it with Bernthal — will provide some answers.

The WONDERfools: Park Eun-Bin, Cha Eun-Woo, Choi Dae-Hoon and Im Seong-Jae (Photos: konamhi, Lee Young Su/Netflix)

The WONDERfools (Netflix, May 15)

Park Eun-Bin and Cha Eun-Woo lead this eight-part action-comedy series set amid Y2K anxieties. The lives of a goofy group of townies are upended when they acquire superpowers — and with great power comes great responsibility… so naturally, they use it to fight an evil cult. Or something like that. Expect tons of SPFX up the wazoo. That smell? It’s Netflix moolah burning. The trailer alone looks more expensive than all the time-travel shows we’ve put out. So jealous.

Bugonia: Emma Stone (Photo: UIP)

Bugonia (HBO Max, May 16)

Emma Stone teams up with director Yorgos Lanthimos for the 1,000th time in this remake of a 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet!. Jesse Plemons plays a conspiracy theorist — and watching him lose his shit is worth the price of admission — who kidnaps Stone’s high-flying CEO, whom he believes is an alien planning to destroy Earth. Given the current state of the world, who can blame him?

Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano (Netflix, May 17)

MMA trailblazers Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano step out of retirement and back into the ring for what’s shaping up to be an epic showdown for the ages. Bookmakers are already tipping Rousey as the winner of the match, which will be livestreamed at 9am SGT from the Intuit Dome In Inglewood, California.

If you’re stepping out…

Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition (Photo: Ross Halfin)

Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition (Lido & GV VivoCity, May 15-17)

Someone at UIP must really love Iron Maiden to bring this in, even if it’s for a limited three-day engagement. (Why can’t they show this at six locations, six halls over six days? Just saying.) Spanning five decades, this documentary chronicles the band’s rise from the pubs of East London to becoming of one of the pioneers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement. Featuring interviews with the band and fans — including Javier Bardem, Metallica’s Lars Ulrich and Chuck D — as well as all-new animated sequences of the group’s legendary mascot, Eddie. Can I play with madness? Permission granted.

Top Gun: Tom Cruise (Photo: UIP)

Top Gun: 40th Anniversary (Shaw Theatres IMAX, May 14-20)

Top Gun, the pop-culture phenomenon that launched Tom Cruise’s career into the stratosphere and sold a gazillion pairs of Ray-Ban aviators, turns 40! Relive the ‘80s again with a one-week IMAX run, alongside with its 2022 sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. I’m not quite sure the movies fit the mood, given what’s going on over at the Strait of Hormuz…Just saying.
