For your consideration...

From YES to I DO: Hazelle Teo and James Wong (Photo: Mediacorp)

From YES to I DO (mewatch, Channel 8, May 26, 8pm)

In Episode 2, married couple-to-be Hazelle Teo and James Wong address their age gap (she’s six years his senior) and share their views on cohabitation, the US-Iran war, and the AI threat.... nah, just messing. Wait a sec, did they already cover the cohabitation bit in The Couple’s Classroom? Or did I imagine it?

Rick and Morty (Photo: HBO Max)

Rick and Morty, Season 9 (HBO Max, May 25)

Cynical mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandon Morty Smith return for another round of time-travelling, interdimensional madness and mayhem. The Season 9 synopsis goes: “Rick and Morty is back, baby! Season 9 is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade-A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like black hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.” Don’t worry, we’ll be there — preferably after a heavy meal, so we’ll have trippy dreams. Who’s with me?

Jae-Seok's B&B Rules: Yu Jae-Seok (Photo: Jin-ho Park/Netflix)

Jae-Seok’s B&B Rules! (Netflix, May 26)

Running Man’s Yu Jae-seok headlines this variety show in which he operates a B&B (his first) and guests must play by his rules. (Sounds like a premise for a horror movie, no?) His staff members include Running Man alum Lee Kwang-soo, Byeon Woo-seok (Perfect Crown), Ji Ye-eun (60 Minutes of Love). Occasionally, celebs like Lee Hyori and Lee Sang-soon (they know a thing or two about running B&Bs) will drop in to help out.

Spider-Noir: Nicolas Cage (Photo: Prime Video)

Spider-Noir (Prime Video, May 27)

Nicolas Cage makes his leading TV series debut as Ben Reilly, a down-on-his-luck private eye in 1930s New York, wrestling with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero (pssst, Spider-Man). But a run-in with a mob boss (Brendan Gleeson) forces him to come out of retirement. The cast also includes Lamorne Morris (New Girl), Li Jun Li (Sinners), Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire), and Abraham Popoola (Slow Horses). The character is based on the comic Spider-Man Noir and was first introduced on screen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.  You can stream the series in either “Authentic Black & White” or “True-Hue Full Colour”.

Anemone: Sean Bean and Daniel Day-Lewis (Photo: HBO Max)

Anemone (HBO Max, May 29)

The reclusive Daniel Day-Lewis takes a break from cobbling (or whatever hobby he’s into these days) to star in this psychological drama about two estranged brothers — with Sean Bean as the younger sibling — reuniting at a remote cabin deep in the woods of Northern England. Day-Lewis co-wrote this film with his son Ronan, who also directs. Brad Pitt is listed as one of the executive producers (which can mean he did f***-all and it’s just a vanity title… maybe).

Propeller One-Way Night Coach: Clark Shotwell and John Travolta (Photo: Apple TV)

Propeller One-Way Night Coach (Apple TV, May 29)

John Travolta has had many passion projects. There’s the Scientology-inspired Battlefield Earth, and the wannabe-gangster biopic Gotti. Neither was well-received. Hopefully, the third time’s a charm. Here, he’s in the pilot seat, making his directorial debut set in the golden age of aviation (between 1918 and 1939, per Wikipedia). It follows a young airplane enthusiast, Jeff (Clark Shotwell), and his mother (Kelly Eviston-Quinnett) as they embark on a one-way cross-country odyssey — in First Class, no less! — to Hollywood. (Today, that kid would be documenting it on TikTok. When he gets trolled, he gets depressed, deletes his account… sorry, where was I?) Travolta, himself a certified pilot, also wrote the script — an adaptation of his 1997 children’s book of the same name.

The New Key (Photo: Fuji Television Network, Inc)

The New Key (Netflix, May 31)

Japan’s leading comedians — led by Chocolate Planet, Shimofuri Myojo and Hanako —  star in this variety show packed with character-based sketches and musical numbers. Yes, we need all the distraction these days. (I need a break from the toenail-cleaning videos.) By the way, I think Kiss or Die, that improv comedy show featuring AV stars (Mary Tachibana!), is one of the craziest Japanese variety shows in ages. Season 2, please! Okay, I've said enough. Let's return to your regular programming...
