Raffaele Sollecito is living a quiet life years after he was wrongfully convicted for the murder of British student Meredith Kercher alongside then-girlfriend Amanda Knox, who was Kercher’s roommate.

The Italian ex-boyfriend of the famed activist is being thrust back into the spotlight via Hulu‘s drama series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. In the series, which Knox co-produced, Sollecito is played by Italian actor Giuseppe De Domenico who, alongside Grace Van Patten as Knox, will recount the infamous 2007 murder of Kercher and the subsequent wrongful convictions.

Knox and Sollecito spent four years in prison between 2009 and 2015 after they were tried multiple times in a high-profile journey of convictions, appeals and re-convictions. Knox and Sollecito were exonerated in March 2015 after it was determined that Rudy Guede, who was also convicted of the murder in 2008, had acted alone.

However, a lot has changed for Sollecito in the years since his conviction was overturned. Here’s everything to know about Sollecito’s life now.

Where Is Raffaele Sollecito Now?

Sollecito is living in Italy and running his own business, according to a 2017 report from BBC. He made a rare public appearance at the August 20 premiere of Hulu’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox. He is a computer engineer, having completed his degree in prison. He said at the time that he speaks to Knox “very occasionally,” but they “never talk about the case.”

After his release from prison, Sollecito release a 2012 book titled, Honor Bound: My Journey to Hell and Back with Amanda Knox, which recounts the investigation of Kercher’s murder and subsequent trial as well as his relationship with Knox and the pressure he came under to falsely incriminate her in the crime.

In 2016, Sollecito briefly landed a gig as a TV crime expert on Italian television. “I have been a victim of a miscarriage of justice, I know the faults of the justice system, what happens in jail and what happens when the media twists the truth,” Sollecito told The Times of his role at the time. “The usual experts on these shows have seen these things through a window — I have lived them.”

In 2017, Sollecito requested compensation from the Italian government over his wrongful conviction, revealing the €500,000 payment would barely cover his debts after amassing enormous legal fees. His claim was rejected.

In 2019, Sollecito announced he was engaged to girlfriend Andreea Mihaela Burtea however it’s unclear if they’re still together.

In 2022, Sollecito made a rare appearance in Paramount+ documentary Who Murdered Meredith Kercher? “Four years in prison. Six months of solitary confinement. And still today, I feel that bitterness. Even though I moved on with my life,” he said.

Sollecito also addressed the theory that he killed Kercher under instructions from Knox as part of a sex game. “I was so happy,” he said of his relationship with Knox. “Why should I do something so hideous to a 20-year-old girl, who I barely know for no reason, for no real motive?”

Sollecito gave another rare interview in January 2025, addressed after Italy’s highest court upheld a slander conviction against Knox over allegations that she accused an innocent man, a local nightclub owner, of murdering Kercher during an interrogation.

“It’s nothing new to me. I don’t trust the Italian judicial system. I didn’t trust it since there was … a conviction, then acquittal, and then conviction again,” Sollecito said to News Nation.

What Happened Between Knox & Sollecito?

Knox and Sollecito met on October 25, 2007 in Perugia where 20-year-old Knox was on a foreign exchange and 23-year-old Sollecito was completing a computer engineering degree.

After Kercher was murdered on November 1, Knox and Sollecito quickly became suspects and were arrested days later. They served as one another’s only alibi in the coming years.

Knox and Sollecito broke up sometime during the trial for Kercher’s murder. Letters exchanged between the pair in prison were released in 2009 and suggested they were no longer together. “We could have really had something special, it’s true,” Knox wrote, per ABC News. “I hope this letter doesn’t hurt you because all of your letters give me a sense of peace. Thank you. I’m here to hold your hand.”

Sollecito and Knox reunited in 2022 when she was there on a trip with her family, meeting in the town of Gubbio which Sollecito said they planned to visit the day Knox discovered Kercher’s body in their apartment.

“It was bitter-sweet to go back as we were supposed to go there in such different circumstances, but it was just nice for us to be able to talk about something that wasn’t the case,” Sollecito told The Mirror.
