Trump ‘open’ to meeting leaders of Ukraine, Russia to push ceasefire

US President Donald Trump is “open” to meeting his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts in Turkey, the White House said, after the two sides failed on June 2 to make headway towards an elusive ceasefire.

Delegations from both sides did, however, agree another large-scale prisoner exchange in their meeting in Istanbul, which in mid-May also hosted their first round of face-to-face talks.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed that Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Mr Trump come together for a third round later in June in either Istanbul or Ankara.

Mr Putin has thus far refused such a meeting. But Mr Zelensky has said he is willing, underlining that key issues can only be resolved at leaders-level.

Colorado attack suspect charged with federal hate crime

A Colorado man has been charged with a federal hate crime for his alleged role in a gasoline-bomb attack on a pro-Israeli rally in Boulder that injured eight people, according to an affidavit issued by the US Department of Justice on June 2.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman was already facing an array of state charges, including attempted murder, after the attack on June 1 in the city of Boulder on a group seeking to draw attention to hostages seized in Hamas’ 2023 attack on Israel.

US Attorney-General Pam Bondi said the suspect would be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law for what was described as an “antisemitic terror attack.”

Polish PM calls for confidence vote after nationalist wins presidency

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on June 2 called for a parliamentary confidence vote in a bid to demonstrate continued support for his pro-EU government after a nationalist candidate won the presidential election.

In a televised address, Mr Tusk said he would “ask for a vote of confidence in the lower house soon” in his coalition government.

He voiced hope that he would be able to cooperate with president-elect Karol Nawrocki.

Portuguese police launch new search for Madeleine McCann in the Algarve

Portuguese police have launched a new search for Madeleine McCann in Portugal’s Algarve region where the British three-year-old disappeared in 2007, following a request from German authorities, the country’s investigative Judicial Police (PJ) said on June 2.

In a statement, the PJ said it was executing a European Investigation Order on behalf of the public prosecutor’s office in the German city of Braunschweig, which in 2022 formally identified German national Christian Brueckner as an official suspect in McCann’s disappearance.

It added that “a wide range of investigations, namely search warrants” would be carried out between June 2-6 in Portugal’s Municipality of Lagos and all evidence seized would be handed over to Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).
