CNN had netizens doing a double take after using a photo of Singapore for a post about a US aircraft carrier arriving in Thailand.

On Sep 2, CNN International shared a Facebook post about the USS Abraham Lincoln arriving in Thailand after spending more than eight months at sea.

But the accompanying photo caught the attention of some netizens.

The pic showed the aircraft carrier against a very familiar skyline, with Marina Bay Sands and the Singapore Flyer clearly visible in the background.

Many immediately thought CNN had used the wrong photo.

“That’s Singapore,” several wrote.

“Photo looks like Singapore? Not Pattaya,” read another comment, while one person tagged CNN International and wrote: “That is a photo of the Singapore skyline!”

Others had a little more fun with it.

“They arrived in Singapore or Thailand? They missed their port?” joked one.

But CNN may not have gotten it wrong after all.

The USS Abraham Lincoln had actually passed through the Singapore Strait while en route to Thailand. It then arrived at Laem Chabang port in Chonburi, near Pattaya, on Sep 2.

So the photo could simply have been taken as the carrier passed Singapore on its way to Thailand.

In fact, one netizen pointed this out in the comments: “It's the picture of the ship as it passed through Singapore... on its way to Thailand.”

CNN's caption also never stated that the photo was taken in Thailand — only that the carrier had arrived there.

At the time of writing, the Singapore photo does not appear in the CNN article linked in the Facebook post.

So, perhaps CNN didn't use the wrong pic.

Though we can't really blame netizens for doing a double take when MBS was staring right back at them.
