Why The Bear's Ayo Edebiri Missed Emmys 2025

E! News·2025-09-15 13:01

Ayo Edebiri is 86ing the Emmy 2025.

The Bear star was noticeably absent at the Sept. 14 ceremony despite being up for two awards. (Click here to see all the celebrities on the red carpet and click here for a complete list of winners.)

When her nominations in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series categories were announced onstage at Los Angeles' Peacock Theater, only a black-and-white headshot shown onscreen next to her fellow nominees.

Why?

E! News has learned that Ayo missed the award show due to a scheduling conflict, as she's currently filming in Japan.

But she wasn't the only one from The Bear cast who chose to sit out the award show. As E! previously confirmed, Jeremy Allen White also skipped the star-studded affair in order to attend is best friend's wedding.

Ayo previously won an Emmy at the 2023 ceremony for her portrayal of chef Sydney Adamu. Not only did she receive another nod for the role this year, but she was also recognized for her directorial debut in the FX series' "Napkins" episode.

"I really enjoy directing,"  she told Vanity Fair in August. "I really love it and I can't wait to do it more. And it’s nice to get to wake up like an hour later because you're not in hair and makeup. I enjoy that as well."

As for online chatter from those who believe the series—centered around the high-stress inner workings of a Chicago restaurant of the same name—should be considered a drama rather than a comedy at award shows? Ayo believes that's "above my pay grade" to address the criticism.

"That's a question for the studios," she said. "We get asked a lot about it as actors and they don't ask the producer, so that's kind of my answer to that."
