If you landed in The Good Place, which of your lifelong heroes would you hope to meet there? That’s the question answered by the penultimate episode of The Good Place, where Chidi, upon arriving at the pearly gates, is gunning to meet the philosophers he admires. When he asks after Aristotle, Socrates, and Plato, he’s disappointed to learn that all three are in hell, for reasons as varied as defending slavery and chewing too loudly. The only philosopher available is Hypatia of Alexandria, played with daffy delight by Lisa Kudrow. In this short but brilliant episode, The Good Place makes a strong statement about how the individuals we canonize often aren’t the most deserving of such honors.
