KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Wildlife Department is yet to be able to ascertain if a crocodile was killed after a ranger was seen in a viral video shooting towards the reptile at the popular Tanjung Aru beach here.

Sabah Wildlife Department director Mohd Soffian Abu Bakar said two shots were fired at two locations - Beach 1 and Beach 3, at 2pm on Sunday (Mar 16).

“However, we could not find any carcass,” he said on Monday (March 17).

In the 43-second video widely shared on social media, a man with a wildlife ranger jacket is seen taking aim towards a crocodile close to the shore of the beach.

On Sunday (March 16), the crocodile was seen close to shore and there was an immediate red flag alert put up for picnickers to stay away from the sea.

Efforts to locate the reptile are being undertaken by the Malaysian Civil Defence Force.
