26-year-old female pillion dies after suspected lightning strike in Hanoi

A 26-year-old woman lost her life in Hanoi, Vietnam, after a suspected lightning strike during a thunderstorm on the afternoon of Monday (1 Sept).

It was reported that the victim was found dead on the road in the Xuân Quan – Long Biên embankment area, in the Bồ Đề ward of Hanoi.

According to VnExpress, the tragic event occurred around 4pm that day, when a sudden thunderstorm with lightning hit the Long Biên district.

Following a loud thunderclap, two people riding a motorcycle on the embankment suddenly fell onto the road.

The man riding the motorcycle was thrown far from the bike, while the woman riding behind was killed instantly.

Pillion hit by lightning had helmet allegedly burned & split in two

Ms Vũ Ngọc Ánh, a local resident living about 300m from the scene, described the moment when the incident occurred.

She recalled that the sky was cloudy and there was light rain. She heard a loud thunderclap, and when she ran outside, she saw that the victim’s helmet was burned and split in two.

Additionally, a nearby seven-seater car had stalled, further indicating the power of the lightning strike.

Investigation underway

The leader of the Long Biên ward’s People’s Committee told VietNamNet that police confirmed the woman’s death was caused by a suspected lightning strike.

As a result, the body was handed over to Bồ Đề ward authorities for further processing.

Authorities are now working to verify the victim’s identity and clarify the cause of the incident.
