Women’s shuttler Ling Ching secures bronze in Universiade

PETALING JAYA: Women’s singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching saved the blushes for the Malaysian badminton camp in the World University Games by clinching the country’s sole medal in the sport.

Ling Ching, who was the only shuttler to reach the semi-finals, won bronze after going down fighting to Thailand’s Tidapron Kleebyeesun 16-14, 5-15, 13-15 Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, on Friday.

The 21-year-old had earlier booked her spot in the last four by beating India’s Devika Sihag 17-15, 15-11.

In the men’s singles, it was disappointment for Eogene Ewe, who missed out on a medal after going down 13-15, 14-16 to Taiwan’s Ting Yen-chen in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, the doubles were a letdown when Fazriq Razif-Bryan Goonting, Liew Xun-Wee Yee Hern (men’s doubles), Vanee Gobi-Clarissa San, Lee Xin Jie-Low Yeen Yuen (women’s doubles), Liew Xun-Vanee and Yee Hern-Clarissa (mixed doubles) all lost in the early rounds.

In the mixed team event, Malaysia failed to win a medal after going down 2-3 to India in the last eight.
