Back in 2018, when the bestselling novel We Were Liars by E. Lockhart came out, it was like every reader out there, teen or not, couldn’t stop talking about it. And now, with the Prime Video series adaptation about to come out on June 18, the teen obsession will surely start all over again.

The novel, and subsequently the series, follows protagonist Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her tight-knit group of friends, nicknamed the Liars, during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island. But after a mysterious accident changes her life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.

The series will feature a variety of newcomers and familiar faces on the screen. Among them will be Emily Alyn Lind playing Cadence, Shubham Maheshwari playing Gat, Esther McGregor as Mirren, Joseph Zada as Johnny, Mamie Gummer as Carrie Sinclair and Candice King as Bess Sinclair.

But before we press play on the show, check out where to buy the book before the premiere below!

“A beautiful and distinguished family. A private island. A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy,” the description reads. “A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive. A revolution. An accident. A secret. Lies upon lies. True love. The truth.”

“Read it,” the description ends. “And if anyone asks you how it ends, just LIE.”

And while we certainly agree that readers of the book should zip it when it comes to the ending, showrunner and executive producer of the show Julie Plec already left the readers rest assured.

“I think fans of the book are going to be very, very happy,” Plec told Deadline. “I think we hit all the marks and all the beats that the book does, and then also expand the universe, layers upon layers upon layers to really make the adult characters really nuanced and really multi layered, and to set the stage for Season 2, which theoretically is going to take us deeper into the moms’ lives as well and add another generation to the story.”

As a reminder, Lockhart’s prequel novel Family of Liars was released in 2023. The third book in the franchise, titled We Fell Apart, was announced in March and will be released on Nov. 4, 2025. Looks like we’ve got plenty of homework to do!
