Zawe Ashton Clarifies Marriage Status With Tom Hiddleston
Tom Hiddleston and Zawe Ashton haven’t jumped on the marriage train just yet.
The Marvels actress explained that she and the Life of Chuck star haven’t walked down the aisle, despite welcoming a baby together in 2022 and announcing in June that they’re expecting another.
“We've been engaged for a long time,” Zawe said on the Miss Me? podcast July 31, “and there are—I think there have been publications that have named us husband and wife already.”
In fact, many of the couple’s friends and family were convinced the two had gotten married after an interview with Vogue in June referred to Tom as her husband—which led to some very awkward exchanges.
“Those text messages,” the 41-year-old recalled, “there's some toxic paragraphs that were thrown my way like, ‘OK, no invite, whatever.’ It's like, ‘No, no, no, it didn't happen.’ We didn't do it in secret. We haven’t eloped. It's just like a semantic thing.”
Zawe can see where the confusion comes from, as she and the 44-year-old have called each other husband and wife on occasion. For the actress, describing each other as “girlfriend” and “boyfriend” doesn't feel right, especially since they've been engaged since 2022 and have built a family together.
But some have taken issue with their decision. As Zawe said, “It's also pissing off people who are actually married. So like, you realize that's just not real yet.”
And while the couple sees the joys in the “spiritual bond” that comes from marriage, they’re not rushing it just yet.
“Engagement has been wonderful,” Zawe gushed. “You can’t cheat the process. And people kind of rush through engagement, and I'm like, ‘Engagement is really useful.’ Why is everyone like, ‘I'm getting engaged to get married?’”
She continued, “Be engaged. Work things out. 'Cause that's like a big yes that opens up a whole new tapestry of understanding between you, between you and each other's families. Because you are saying yes to each other's whole lives. It’s bigger than just the two of you.”
But Zawe and Tom are more than happy to say yes to each other’s whole lives, especially as they’ve supported each other since making their debut as a couple in 2021.
In fact, Tom gave the Velvet Buzzsaw alum a rare public shoutout at the 2024 People’s Choice Awards.
"Zawe, none of this makes sense without you," he said while accepting the award for Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show of the Year for Loki. "Thank you for your love and support every step of the way."
