26 May - It was revealed that the upcoming Zhang Ziyi film will be released in two parts.
As reported on Epoch Times, the film, "She's Got No Name", which premiered at Cannes Film Festival last year, has had no new development until recently, when it was revealed to have been selected as the opening film of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival. The festival is scheduled to take place from 13 to 22 June.
However, it was then revealed that the movie is divided into two parts, with the first part's Chinese title being "Jiangyuan Lane: Mystery". This is the part which will be screened at the festival.
The news sparked heated discussion, with many of Zhang's fans expressed worry that the film would follow the path of the actress' previous film "The Crossing" (2014), which bombed at the box office due to it being a two-parter.
Director Peter Chan recently addressed this change, saying that the story is too large to be contained in one film, seeing the complexity of the case and complex relationships between the characters.
"After constant polishing and consideration, I decided to release the film in two parts. This is a very special arrangement and a big adventure for me," he added.
Co-starring Jackson Yee, Zanilia Zhao and Yang Mi among others, the film is based on the unsolved murder case in Shanghai of a housewife killing her husband. It was later adapted into the non-fiction novel "Reversal of the Case" by Jiang Feng.
The film was originally a single movie with 2 hours and 30 minutes runtime
