MELAKA: Zoo Melaka is calling on the public to take part in naming a male Malayan panther cub, the only one of its litter to survive as part of efforts to raise awareness about local wildlife conservation and captive breeding initiatives.

Born on Feb 24 this year, the cub has since been placed with its mother, with close supervision from the zoo's veterinary and keeper teams.

It marks a significant milestone for the zoo's captive breeding programme involving the endangered Malayan panther species.

In an interview with the New Straits Times, Zoo Melaka director Dr Zahidah Izzati Zeid said the contest aims to connect the public with the zoo's conservation work.

"By giving the public the opportunity to name the Malayan panther cub, we hope to garner public interest and create awareness on the success of our captive breeding initiatives of local wild Malaysian species," she said.

The cub's birth is the result of intensive observation by the zookeepers, who monitored the compatibility between the male and female panthers over time, including their complex oestrus cycle and individual behaviours.

Zahidah said Zoo Melaka works closely with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks to increase the population of local species through strategic breeding.

"This cub is the outcome of continuous effort and cooperation between departments, and we hope it inspires greater appreciation for Malaysia's rich biodiversity," she added.

The naming contest runs from 1 to 25 July 2025, and members of the public can submit their name suggestions via the online form.

As of now, over 20,000 submissions have already been received.

"We encourage public and corporate agencies to continue supporting Zoo Melaka through donations, sponsorships, or participation in our various programmes," Zahidah said.
