Cyberpunk tributeEpicCD Projekt Red has announced a long term partnership with Epic Games where they are going to use Unreal Engine 5 to build the next Witcher game. Were all calling it Witcher 4 even though theyve said it is not Witcher 4, and appears to be moving on from Geralt and is about a new school. But one thing CDPR made clear during this announcement was that Cyberpunk 2077 would be staying on their current REDengine, even as it gets new DLC in 2023. This is, of course, fairly obvious, as you dont just switch engines for a game when new DLC comes out, and so if we see Cyberpunk in Unreal Engine 5, it will have to be for the next game.Well, fans dont want to wait that long.Given that anyone can make things in Unreal Engine 5, many fans have taken to trying to envision what Cyberpunk 2077, its characters and Night City would look like in Unreal Engine 5. And the result is pretty fantastic, as seen in the compilation video below, which features work from multiple artists mentioned in the description:The aging REDengine is certainly to blame for at least some measure of Cyberpunk 2077s problems, although when its working properly, bug free and on a high-end PC, Cyberpunk still can be an extremely gorgeous game. But obviously Unreal Engine 5 would open up entirely new worlds of what Cyberpunk 2077 could be using the more advanced, more flexible engine. As seen in this video, that could be anything from more detailed cityscapes to more realistic facial animation on characters. Unreal Engine 5EpicWe have already seen some level of upgrades through the modding community of Cyberpunk 2077, which CDPR has embraced through both tools, and even hiring some of the top modders to work at the company. As for when we could see a Cyberpunk 2078 officially at CDPR, that remains to be seen. We do not even have a release window for the new Witcher game yet, but that is not likely to be here before 2024, Id guess, at the earliest. Even if CDPR says theyre working on these series simultaneously now, still, thats maybe what, 2026-2027 for a new Cyberpunk? Thats quite a ways off. However, given that the game will soon cross 20 million sales, and they have tapped a love for the IP, I certainly think a sequel will happen in order to try to correct the mistakes of the first game, and restore both the series and CDPRs reputation. Its just going to take a very long time, but I do believe it will be in Unreal Engine 5 when it finally does arrive. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.
