Neighbours in the village of Czerniki, northern Poland, said Piotr Gierasik used to beat and chase his son Damian out of their home when he wanted to have sex with daughter Paulina

A fresh twist in the incest 'house of horrors' case has been revealed amid claims the alleged baby-killer beat up his own son and forced him to leave the house when he wanted to have sex with his daughter.

Piotr Gierasik, 54, was this week charged with three counts of murder, a charge of incest with his 20-year-old daughter, and a charge of having incestuous relations with another daughter after the bodies of infants were discovered in the basement. His 20-year-old daughter Paulina was charged with two counts of murder and a charge of having an incestuous relationship with her father.

It comes as neighbours in the village of Czerniki, northern Poland, said Mr Gierasik used to beat and chase his son Damian out of their home when he wanted to have sex with Paulina. The father and daughter were in an incestuous relationship and it is thought Paulina was the mother of some of the deceased babies.

The three corpses were discovered in shallow graves and wrapped in plastic bags in the property's dingy basement amid fears there may be further bodies. According to the prosecution, the two murdered children came from a relationship between a father and daughter, who said she was in a relationship with him of her own free will. The third baby is from the father's relationship with his second daughter after he allegedly raped her.

"There were times when the boy spent many hours on the street, no one wanted him. I wanted to help him, but I was afraid that if his father found out he would start another row with him", an anonymous neighbour told Fakt. She added: "He kept starting fights and calling him abusive names. I didn't want to create any more problems for him." Another neighbour said that Damian, who is now being looked after in a care centre due to disabilities, had told her: "My dad beats me, calls me names and throws me out of the house. He swears at me."

The neighbour continued: "He added that there is something else. I asked what, and he said it was about the father and daughter... and that's why they kicked him out. I don't know if he saw it, but he must have seen it because how did he know they were doing something like that?" Another local told Fakt newspaper: "They lived like a couple. She called him Piotr, by his first name. They walked around hand in hand. A few months ago, he shaved her head so that other boys wouldn't look at her. She looked up to him as if he were God."

Police had conducted a visit at the property after receiving a disturbing tip-off from social services, but while searching the house they could not escape a horrifying smell coming from the basement. According to prosecutors there "is no doubt that the children were murdered."

Joanna Mikołajska, head of the Social Welfare Centre in Stara Kiszewa said: "We, as social services, cannot enter homes by force. We would have to have a specific report to have a basis for action. We always appeal for these reports. They can be anonymous. Now we have received such a signal and our action was immediate, but on a human level, we analyse everything. We wonder whether we did everything right, whether we could have done something more."
