No casualties in fruit shop explosion, suspected to be caused by carbide

KLANG: An explosion at a fruit shop, believed to have been caused by the use of carbide to accelerate fruit ripening, damaged several vehicles along Jalan Gudang Nenas, Bandar Baru Klang, this evening.
The blast sent fruits flying and scattered goods across the area, with several nearby stalls also damaged, including roofs torn off and flung by the force of the explosion.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations division assistant director Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they received an emergency call regarding the incident at 5.21pm.
He said no casualties were reported.

"The operations commander confirmed that an explosion occurred at the rear section of a fruit shop measuring 70 by 100 square feet.
"The impact caused a partial collapse of the shop's wall, measuring 30 by 30 square feet. Six cars parked beside a nearby mosque were also affected.
"The cause is still under investigation, but initial findings suggest the explosion may have involved carbide used to speed up fruit ripening," he said in a statement.

Using of carbide in fruits storage is commonly used by farmers and fruits store to hastening their premature harvest of fruits to get ripped for sales. The improper handling of these carbide may causes explosion when it gets over heated.
