Why Did Millie Bobby Brown Adopt? The Big Hint You May Have Missed Earlier This Year

We’re still reeling from the news that Millie Bobby Brown and her husband Jake Bongiovi adopted a baby girl (!!) over the summer. Didn’t they just get married? Isn’t she only 21?! Yes and yes, but if you’ve been keeping up with the Strangers Things star, then you should have expected this major life update. Mainly because she told us she was going to.

Brown is used to solving clues as her character Enola Holmes, but did you know Millie Bobby Brown is good at hiding clues too? Just call her Taylor Swift, because Brown has been dropping hints for months about her family plans. And in a podcast back in March, Brown revealed that she wants a big family — and she doesn’t view adopted babies as any different from biological babies.

The Electric State star appeared on the SmartLess podcast in March, where she revealed that she and her husband, now 23, weren’t worried about age when considering becoming parents.

“I’m still really young. My mum actually had her first child when she was 21, and my dad was 19,” Brown said. “It’s been my thing since before I met Jake. Since I was a baby, I told my mom … I wanted to be a mom just like my mom was to me.”

How sweet is that? And even though Jake told her he didn’t want to talk about babies until they got married, she knew that they would have a lot one day. “I really want a family. I want a big family. I’m one of four, he’s one of four. So it is definitely in our future,” she continued.

But the biggest hint about today’s news: she opened up about adoption.

“For me, I don’t see having your own child as really any different as adopting,” she said. “… My home is full of love for anyone and anything. And so, that is what we kind of stand by. The energy in our house is the door is always open, and we want everyone to feel comfortable.”

“We’re very much, like, we’re always going to be wanting to start a family. It doesn’t matter in what way or when, but it will happen,” she added.

As for why it happened now, why not? In a 2023 interview with Glamour, Brown revealed, “My dream was to have a baby.”

In the same interview, she opened up about how her family encouraged her to go for things she wants and not wait for opportunities to pass you by. “It’s like—I know I should make this movie now. I know I should write this book now. I know I should do this now,” she told the outlet.

“It’s not because I can’t do it in 10 years; of course I can do it in 10 years,” Brown continued. “But why, when I know that it’s going to work now? Just like Florence will be there in 10 years. You’ll be able to see my movie in 10 years on TV. And I know that Jake and I will be okay.”

“It’s like, why wait? Let’s go for it,” she added.

It’s not hard to imagine she used the same words to convince Bongiovi to adopt now.

Today, Brown and Bongiovi announced their baby news on Instagram. “This summer, we welcomed our sweet baby girl through adoption,” she wrote. “We are beyond excited to embark on this beautiful next chapter of parenthood both in peace and privacy.”

“And then there were 3,” she added. “Love, Millie and Jake Bongiovi.”
