Two men arrested over extremist claims, 'attack on PM's home' comment

KUALA LUMPUR: Two men have been arrested over social media posts deemed seditious and threatening, and have since been remanded for further investigations.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar said the suspects, aged 37 and 43, were believed to be the owners of the X accounts @ChongKahtze and @IFactoreal.

The first suspect was remanded for two days until tomorrow, while the second was remanded for four days until Thursday.

"This comes after police detected the two viral posts on Sunday, which carried elements of sedition and criminal intimidation.

"Investigations are being conducted by the federal police Classified Criminal Investigation Unit, D5," he said in a statement.

Kumar said the post by @ChongKahtze alleged that Malaysia would be taken over by extremists and face a revolution, while the post by @IFactoreal involved comments on the Israeli attack on the prime minister's residence.

He said the first case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 for seditious tendency, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements that cause public alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper network use.

The second case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Kumar warned that firm and uncompromising action would be taken against anyone who deliberately made or circulated statements with seditious elements, criminal threats, or those likely to cause public alarm and disrupt harmony in Malaysia.
