The Singapore Government has revoked the citizenship of Monisha Catherine Iswaran with effect from 19 August 2025, according to a notice published in the Government Gazette the following day.

The revocation was made under Article 135(1)(b) of the Constitution, which allows authorities to strip citizenship from Singaporeans who, after turning 18, apply for or use a foreign passport. The gazette did not provide further details.

The announcement has sparked public attention because the name is identical to that of the daughter of former Transport Minister S. Iswaran, who was involved in a high-profile corruption case earlier this year. However, the government has not confirmed whether the individual named is the same person, and no clarification has been provided.

The timing has also drawn notice, coming just days after property tycoon Ong Beng Seng was sentenced for abetting obstruction of justice in relation to the corruption probe that also implicated S. Iswaran.

Singapore maintains a strict stance against dual nationality. Even the act of applying for or using a foreign passport can result in loss of citizenship. Though cases of revocation are uncommon, they highlight the uncompromising enforcement of this policy.

With no comments so far from either the authorities or Monisha herself, it remains unclear whether the woman named in the gazette is indeed the same individual related to the former minister, or simply someone who shares the same name.
