KAPIT: A river cleanliness campaign and a ‘Leader with the People’ gathering were held at Rumah Kenyalang along Sungai Menuan, Batang Rajang here yesterday.

On hand to launch the campaign was Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit.

Also in attendance were the organiser Councillor Martin Bilun, Kapit DistrictoOfficer Cerisologo Sabut, local community leaders, as well as headmen and residents of the nearby longhouses.

The longhouses are Rumah Kenyalang, Rumah Begau, Rumah Latip, Rumah Leyang, Rumah Jacob and Rumah Jambon.

Speaking at the function, Martin regarded Sungai Menuan as the main source of water and fish for more than 10 longhouses in the area for many decades, besides being their main mode of transportation.

He took the opportunity to thank the Sarawak government for the RM57-million Jalan Menuan project, as well as other developments that had brought much benefit to the local people.

“Since he was elected as our representative, Jamit has proven to be a capable leader. He is always on the ground listening to our plight and finding solutions for us,” he said.

On behalf of residents of the six longhouses involved in the river-cleaning exercise, Martin also pledged their total support to Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi as Kapit MP.
